Martha Spencer - Martha is twenty-two years old and a senior at Emory and Henry College, majoring in Public Policy and Community Service. She is a vital member of the Whitetop Mountain Band, and a daughter of Emily and Thornton Spencer, who learned their music at the feet of the late and great Albert L. Hash. Martha's dad Thornton, was Albert's brother-in-law. Like other members of this super band Martha not only dances and sings, she plays guitar not just well--extraordinarily well. Among her other talents Martha plays fiddle, banjo and bass fiddle--a well rounded musician. Much of her inspiration comes from contact with Albert Hash as a young girl. Martha says she has not decided what to do when she graduates. She will likely do just what she has been doing giving music lessons at Mt Rogers School and playing with the band all over the area. No doubt she will be a rousing success in what ever she undertakes. There is no substitute for talent and Martha certainly has that attribute in great quantity. Martha and her family are a very important part of the Smyth County Jam.
