Sammy Shelor - The Smyth County Jam is honored and pleased that Sammy Shelor came to play for us Monday night April 21st! Sammy is a professional musician with the Lonesome River Band; he has been with them for the last twenty-four years. Sammy has been playing music for forty-seven years; professionally for the last thirty plus years. Sammy's maternal grandfather also played music. He makes his home in Meadows of Dan, Virginia. Sammy is related to the Shelors who were involved in the Bristol Sessions. He played for some time with the Virginia Squires. Sammy says he is now enroute to Nashville, Tennessee to work with Alan Jackson. Sammy plays banjo, guitar, some electric guitar and so on; as he puts it. He admires the music of Gene Parker from Ferrum, Virginia, as well as Earl Scruggs. Sammy could not name a favorite tune/song. as there are too many to mention. This is his first time at the Smyth County Jam and we sincerely hope he will visit us again soon.
