Charlie Powers - Charlie lives in Piney Flats, Tennessee. We are fortunate that he saw fit to visit the Smyth County Jam. He and the band "Duty Free" are a welcome addition to our stage. They play some very hard-driving bluegrass that makes you want to get up and dance! Charlie plays left-handed guitar and he says "some claw-hammer banjo, although not enough to mention!" He has a very distinct style and excellent delivery with his fine clear voice. Almost everyone in his family played music at one time or another. Charlie's brother plays five-string banjo. Charlie makes his living as an outboard motor technician. He has two children, a girl and a boy. Charlie's inspiration has been Doc Watson, Maybelle Carter and Tony Rice. He says he could not choose a favorite song; there are just too many he likes.
