John Merritt - John comes to the Smyth County Jam from his home in Tazewell, Virginia. He says he just plays bass, but sometimes a little guitar. He has been playing off and on for about four years. He is a member of the "Crawdad Creek Band". His son, Joshua, who is deceased, played banjo. John is retired from VDOT in Bland. John says a long time ago he and his cousins had a band. He likes to build model airplanes for a hobby. John says his favorite musicians are Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs. He likes all bluegrass songs/music and could not name a favorite one.
