Steve Kilby - The Smyth County Jam is glad to see this fine guitarist here with us. Steve was born and lived a good part of his years in Wilkes County, North Carolina. He and his wife Penny now live at Mouth of Wilson, Virginia. He has been playing guitar for forty plus years. He also plays mandolin, bass and banjo. When asked if he sings he said, "like a man in jail--behind the bars and can't find the key!" Steve says he has won some where close to a hundred guitar contests, possibly more. He is indeed master of that instrument! Steve is presently involved in the Junior Jam (with Helen White) out of Sparta, North Carolina teaching guitar. He started there in 2000, being the first instructor. He also teaches at the John C. Campbell Folk School and at Mars Hill Bluegrass program as well as several other music camps. He met his wife Penny at Wayne Henderson's Christmas party in 1997. Steve says he likes to listen to the music of Doc Watson and Tony Rice.
