Hurricane Creek Band - The Smyth County Jam welcomes Hurricane Creek Band members to our jam--their first time here.
We have Fayne Hess who is a strong singer and plays guitar. Fayne comes from Miller's Creek area (near Sword's Creek). He says he 'fools around with the fiddle some what. Fayne's mother played guitar and sang. He has a son also, who is a musician, and has his own band. He is a retired coal miner. Fayne likes the music of Mac Wiseman and Tony Rice.
Rannie Breeding was born in Buchanan County, VA. He now lives in Russell County with his wife Cathy. Rannie spent thirty-five years as a coal miner. He retired in 2006 from that dangerous occupation. Rannie plays the mandolin with the group.
Wanace Breeding comes from Davenport, VA area. He is Rannie's older brother and plays fiddle. Wanace says he also plays mandolin, guitar and used to play banjo some. He is retired now days. Wanace says all but one of his family plays music, as did his mother. He says he used to play with Jimmy Martin and the Sunny Mountain boys and played some with Charlie Moore and the Dixie Pardners. Naturally, he likes their music very much, having played with these bands.
Sherman Osborne, whom some call "Ozzie," is the Hurricane Creek banjo player. Sherman is a disabled miner after working twenty-two years in the mines. He says he can't think of any one in his family who makes music besides himself. He has four children. Sherman plays guitar and sings too. He hails from Cedar Bluff, VA.
