John Hughes - John Hughes card reads "professional friend" which is quite believable. He is a very welcome newcomer to the Smyth County Jam. John plays guitar with Mal Cooper, although he does not travel much with Mal. At one time he did some travelling all over in Michigan and Ohio. He says he has been playing for thirty or forty years. John is a very young eighty-six, (almost eighty-seven). One could never guess that he is near that age; as he has a young out-look on life . He said he drove a truck and a bus (Greyhound) for fifty-four years. He is also a Shriner. John has four daughters, nine grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. He says he seldom misses a rerun of the Lawrence Welk show.
