Wayne Henderson - We are very fortunate at the Smyth County Jam to have such a wonderful variety and high caliber of performers visit us! It was a real surprise to see Wayne Henderson once more. There is not a lot to say about Wayne that has not already been said . Wayne has been in many major publications here in the USA, and honored every where he goes. Wayne lives in what was once Rugby, VA. very near the old post office. He carried the mail until he retired from the postal system, in addition to being the premier luthier of the state and quite possibly the world.
He is known internationally and has visited many countries; including parts of Asia, Africa, South America, the Middle East to name a few. Wayne states he has just got back from Brazil, where he was looking for wood. Now he and friend Helen White are leaving for Germany and Switzerland shortly Wayne has a brother Max, who is an excellent mandolin player, although Max is not in the best of health as of late. We wish Max improved health. He also has a sister Shirleen, who is retired. His daughter Jayne, is in law school in Vermont, Jayne is twenty four years old. She is Wayne's only child .
The third Saturday in June is the Wayne Henderson Music Festival and Guitar Competition at Grayson Highlands Park, near Wayne's home, just off Route 58.. He always has the 'cream of the crop in professional entertainers at his festival. Wayne invites all who are interested to visit his website which is simply: www.waynehenderson.org. This man is a shining example of the kind of people we should emulate. He is always giving of himself generously and with out expecting a reward; he does many benefits for those who call up on him in need . Wayne says he admires the work of Doc Watson.
Larry, it is hard to quit on this one because Wayne has done so many things and been so many places. AG
